Qommunity Editor

LGBTQymru is Wales’ only all-Wales, bilingual LGBTQ+ community website which publishes on-line articles about all aspects of LGBTQ+ life in Wales.  You can hear more about us and read our articles here.

We are excited to open up our application process for a Qommunity Editor to join our team of volunteers.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking to recruit an additional Qommunity Editor who has a passion for and some experience of sharing people’s stories and bringing greater awareness of the lives of LGBTQ+ people.

If you have some relevant writing and/or editing experience and you would be confident to assist our Qommunity Reporters to source and create LGBTQ+ inclusive content, we’d love to hear from you.

What’s involved?

In a nutshell:

  • The main responsibilities are to contribute ideas, with other Editors, to ensure our growing collection of articles is broad, intersectional, has a good geographical spread and is interesting and relevant to all LGBTQ+ lives in Wales and beyond.

  • You will work with a volunteer Qommunity Reporter for each article and provide direction, empowerment and support so that they can develop the article within your agreed word count and by the deadline set.

  • Working as part of a wider team where good communication and driving delivery are key, you will also be happy to take initiative, be confident to edit articles to a good standard, happy to contribute to editorial content discussions, feedback to reporters to assist them in their development and to value their contribution.

Will it take up too much of my spare time?

Not really!

The time commitment would generally be not more than a couple of hours each month.

As one of a close team of Qommunity Editors, the time required is minimal and flexible for general articles.  Once you’ve commissioned an article from one of our Qommunity Reporters, you’ll need a weekly update on progress until they’ve submitted the draft for you to edit. Editing time can vary from article to article but most writing has been of a high standard and almost always between 300-500 words.  You’ll need to ensure that the Reporter has submitted adequate pictures to accompany the article and select which ones should be published.

Occasionally, something more urgent is required e.g. we are invited to attend a show or an event and an article reviewing it or writing up an interview is required within a week or so. When a Reporter takes on one of these assignments, we also need one of our Editors to agree to edit the article in a fairly short time.

There are regular Qommunity Editor meetings held on-line for around 30 minutes to ensure updates are shared and that our pipeline of articles is looking healthy . Qommunity Reporters are invited to join us to provide updates or to say hello and hear about other developments. Some Reporters prefer to submit updates in writing.

How do I apply?

So, if you have positive and inclusive LGBTQ+ values in line with ours, want to contribute to the publication of all-Wales LGBTQommunity articles, can edit written work to a good standard, provide leadership to volunteer reporters, contribute confidently, creatively and are happy to work as part of a team as well as under your own steam, we’d love to talk to you.

We aim to get back to you within 10 working days of 10 March 2023.

We are diverse group of volunteer Editors and Reporters and we want to reflect the Qommunities with which we connect, support and celebrate.  We would therefore be delighted to hear from people from all backgrounds and cultures, our trans* family, and those who have a disability/long-term health condition. Any information you choose to provide about yourself as part of the recruitment process will remain entirely confidential, used for statistical purposes only, and will not be treated as part of your application.
